Thank for all chiming in and sharing links!
I had checked out the Toshiba, after it was confirmed to work, but couldn't find the capacity I wanted. I'll wait another week or so and try again.
I have certainly run across the Sabrent SSDs, but couldn't locate enough information about their power consumption/usage.
Check this out: MyDigitalSSD SBXe 42mm (2242-D3-B+M) M.2 PCIe 3.1 x2 NVMe SSD . I have the 2280 version (480) It is very power efficient , runs reasonably well (not as fast as the Samsungs, i.e) and is really inexpensive. Look at the specs on their web site. Perhaps you just accidently bought the wrong model before.
I am running with the drive as my file system, booting off of the emmc, and find that it will boot when the battery is very low--down to 4% at least. I did have to aattack the adapter with a hacksaw...:-) for the 2280
