using pinebook as an airgapped machine

@Shoananas

Sorry, no.

I use an old laptop for my saving wallet and a Ledger Nano S for my spending wallet. The latest Ledger model costs ~$150 and it's not even trustless and will never be . I spent some time looking for portable devices that boot from SD/USB and have removable wifi and storage but was only able to find +$800 2 in 1 convertible laptops which are of course overkill for doing small calculations and displaying QR code.

Pine can easily capture a decent market share from Ledger and Trezor. Both companies admit that you need trust them, and crypto was created to eliminate that.

The mainboard schematics seem to show clearly which pins deal with wifi /bt , did you not attempt to remove or have someone remove them? What about attempting to just destroy the bt/wifi ?

Also, what would be the problem with just never installing the drivers and never letting your pinebook ever go online vs using a ledger or trezor?

I don't own any Pine product, I use an old laptop with both hdd and wifi chip removed. I was looking into Pine products because they are more portable.

it depends on the level of security you are seeking. You can't guarantee things at the software level. If there's an open network nearby and the drivers get installed somehow, your key could leak. The idea is to assume that the software is malicious and will try to leak the key.

Good job. Thanks to you and your friend. Hopefully the newer versions will have a user-friendly way to do this.

By the way, if you are extra paranoid, you might want to remove speakers too:
