If you plan to use mate you should use the network manager applet in mate, also the name of interfaces has been changed from wlan0 to something like wlx*.

OK I have wlx0013ef800c2c I wondered if it may be the device but didnt recognise it.  Unfortunately the HDMI isnt working with my screen so im in CLI only at the moment.

If you can boot to a GUI it should be easier to configure your wireless from there.

You will need to edit your wpa_supplicant with your router/modem settings to make a connection from the terminal.

I'm running armbian64 image and can do all that by running sudo armbian-config from an ssh session.
