Interesting project. Ultimately that's the way to go to get the best end product, although I'm sure it's slow, tedious work.
This whole thing reminds me of when I first started messing with Linux in the late 1990's, and all of the various graphic cards ran on proprietary drivers in Windows, and barely worked in Linux. Now most of those manufacturers don't exist, and Linux support is available for the 2 that are left. Hopefully it will eventually work out this way in the SBC world as well.
