I'd recommend sha256, md5 is known to be broken.
WinDiskImager supports MD5-hash directly in its dialogue, so MD5 seems to be the better choice.

Did you expand your root_fs? Even using a 128GB Card directly after decompressing the image only shows a 4GB Partition! Can you verify the free space on the SMB-server folder on the pine itself?
