@"jed" , Thanks for clearing up the mystery.  I really should keep a  Mobian calendar so I know what happened when, and how something got fixed...

If a new kernel breaks it, perhaps we should just be patient and wait for a newer kernel to fix it. Glad things worked out for you both (and anyone else that had the same issue).
