Latest firmware for PinePhone modem!
#81
If you are Not having problems with your modem I would suggest staying with what works, or maybe the open source version when it matures a little bit.

The reason for changing it - would be to fix it or improve it.

I think my phone runs cooler now than it did a year ago... they are improving the software at an amazing rate.

---> I don't think I ever felt a cold smart phone.

I don't know if I have problems with modem as I have just replaced the mainboard yesterday. Smile

I think a year ago it could easily became extremely hot, now it is simply really hot. Smile
Anyway, I think a general smartphone does not heat up to around 50 degree Celsius at around 21 degree Celsius room temperature when simply looking at its display and a terminal program... or who knows... Smile

However, open source version seems to be really good once it will have full and stable functionality.
They seem to manage modem's CPU frequency in a way it may run much cooler, I hope it will be the final and complete solution in the near future.

Anyway, what you feel cooler may be related to the newer firmwares discussed here?
What firmware are you using?

https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PinePhone

command "AT+QGMR" also prints version, you only have type, in this case "EG25GGBR07A08M2G".

https://github.com/Biktorgj/quectel_eg25_recovery

this site has multiple stock firmware options, but it boils down to 01.002.01.002 , 01.003.01.003 , 30.004.30.004 . devs recommend 01.002.01.002. but i'm testing 30.004.30.004 at a moment.

my view, they all equally bad. one firmware may fix something and others may fix other issues.

and usual biological thermal nuclear explosion warnings. updating modem firmware is one's own responsibility. usually in bad case modem just becomes brick but if biological thermal implosion occurs then it's not my fault or dev's fault.

Firmware version :   EG25GGBR07A08M2G

The same firmware is in all my 3 PMOS Convergent phones and in my 1 Manjaro Convergent phone.

Me ?  I think it is the improved software that has lowered the operating temperature...  But, that is just my opinion though.

too early to tell. but it won't jam or crash instantly. sleep or suspend is not tested, because those are headaches for my use case.

previous is not firmware issue, but might be helpful.
