just trying to play a youtube video
#1
Sad
hey

so a reminder:
I successfully managed to boot and start up my 512MB DDR pine64 with Debian, the internet connection via wifi works fine.
obviously as a pilot test I wanted to watch a youtube video, but it takes forever even start playing it - iceweasel soon gets stucked, pops out a script error and I must close the browser.

I know that the 512MB is the most basic model, but come on - it can't even run a youtube video?

is there something i can actually do? higher voltage on the power supply (now it's a 2.1A 5V)? using another app or browser (though even Kodi runs slowly)?

really hope theres another solution rather than spending extra money on the pine64+ or, god forbid, rasp pi...

thanks in advance...

Playing a YouTube video is not a correct test and ist totally unrelated to the amount of RAM. Also if you have the 512mb model it is not a good idea to install a desktop environment as most required more RAM than that.

Then how can i play a youtube video normally with these settings?  i mainly bought the pine to use it as a media center for my tv, youtube is basic use rather than a test.

there's no other desktop envirnoment suitable for the 512mb model which uses less RAM? anything being developed right now?

and finally, if i'd like to extend my RAM, is there any way i could do that with an external RAM module?

Really thank you for the answers Blush

Unfortunately RAM can't be upgraded, as it is soldered directly onto the board.

Also sadly, the focus for most development does seem to be for the 1GB and 2GB RAM Pine64 models, so the 512MB model is getting left behind in this respect...

Well then you clearly bought the wrong device. You can try android which has hardware accelerated video decode which also might work with Youtube (but i have no clue about Android and it does not seem to be supported on the 512MB model).

Sure there are plenty desktop environments for Linux with work with 512MB model. Probably the easiest to use would be LXDE. Still this has nothing todo with hardware accelerated video decoding (especially in the browser) which might as well never happen for the Pine64.

no any other lite version of android suitable for 512MB/lite specifications was ever developed? like older versions (up to KitKat)?
has anyone tried android on a 512MB model, or it's not even possible to install it?

i'll try the LXDE though, thanks. really trying to max out this model before ordering the 1/2GB  Wink
