Google on Android?
#1
I can sure understand wanting to avoid Google.  But I'm trying to find a solution for someone who does want Google.  I've tried several versions of Google Play Services on Android 7.1 to no avail.  I do understand that Google does "not support" this version of Android anymore.  But is there any way to get any version of Google Play Services working on this version of Android now?

I'd like to know that as well!

It's likely going to require compiling a custom image to have Play Services right off the bat on the PBP Android img. You can however, if you're willing to spend the time to drop it in, get MicroG going in the Android img.

I guess the question I should've asked is "is there a Google Play Services alternative?" in which case MicroG might be the answer.  I'll have to check that out.  Thank you.

Have you found a package that works? Pico, Nano, ect...

No. It seems MicroG would do the job, and there are maybe a few others. But the person for whom I was setting up Android seems to have acclimated to Manjaro, which I guess is fine so long as it just keeps working and I don't have to mess with it. Arch Linux, which I never used before, seems to stray too far from Unix for me.

I was able to get Google play store on Amazon's 7th generation 10 inch fire tablet which is based on Android version 5 back in 2018.
I just found a guide to getting it on there, and it worked.

I am sure if you follow similar directions, it will work.

This might be a 7.x problem then. I've tried and tried on several devices with this version, and nothing works. Something in the system got updated in a way that's incompatible with the Play Store, I guess.

I do have a 9th generation (not sure what happened to 8th) Amazon fire tablet. It is based on Android 7. I could try to see if the same guides work for it also.

I happen to have an Android phone I bought in 2018 which happens to be version 7. It gets Google store updates all the time.

You may want to try one of those Guides to get Google play on Amazon fire tablets. There are numerous other services you have to install prior to actually putting the Google Play store on it.

I also have a Grandstream VoIP telephone which uses Android 4.2 or 4.4 as the interface in the screen. In this case, Google play store is not installed by default. They have their own Grandstream store installed. Though, there is a link in it to install Google Play store. It also works

Thank you. I only have one device that still has 7.x (Gpad), and I can live without Google on it.
