What I've done is put a startup script in the session file for lightdm (I always start with the mate-ui on pmos and that installs lightdm) and put a list of WMs in it. That way I can exit them and the next in the list will start so I can experiment with lots of different UIs. I always avoid experimenting with the first so that I can recover the configs on the later ones.
