I can now answer my own question...
On initial boot, I am asked to create a user with a password. I did just that. It then wouldn't let me continue until I entered a PIN. It was only when I booted from an SD card image and repeated the process that I realised that Password and PIN were the same thing and that I should only have entered digits (numbers) originally (yes. It does tell you first time around). Since my password happened to contain numbers I could unlock by just entering those.
