I have also asked for a 1080p - TV (rather than LCD panel) oriented build; so this is also something thats happening in-house.
When it comes to the Playstore not working on A8.1 - this isn't really PINE64's fault. Google just became more stringent with their services starting A8.1... that's life. I hope people who want the Playstore on there will find a work-around.
You can find me on IRC, Discord and Twitter

I have a Rock64, RockPro64, Odroid XU3 and XU4, a Tinkerboard S, and a Raspberry Pi 3 to boot, the furthest that I can get on any of these boards using various Android builds is to get the Playstore up and running and install apps, but the biggest thing that I wish for is to get Play Movies running to where I can download my movies and TV shows, it will always stop with a Cannot Fetch License error.
Now with the Rock64 I have gotten Android TV running with its version of Play Movies, which... seems to just a streaming service, there is no download and cache the movie feature that I can find, which bums me out greatly.
But I gather most people who consume these little Arm boards and put Android on them usually just want to stream movies and TVs.
That or build robots.

Well, I have trouble understanding why Android experience should be different between phone, tablet, tv box ect. Android should be Android, should be Android. I thought that was the basis of its design, platform independent. Big fan of Google here, but the ball is in their hands on that I think. Either the layer separation is not working that well or they need to make it more "developer" friendly so any build can support any app.

I think it's pretty awesome that there are different versions of Android, such as the regular Android, then the TV version and the watch version and etc.
Once I have enough free time I'd love to cobble together a Raspberry Pi, a battery and a small touch screen and somehow mount it to my arm and gloat to my friends that I built my own "smartwatch", the best OS that I could imagine to use would be the smart watch version of Android.
But of course the issue that so many people who have their own unique gadget is that they would love to have a small dedicated team of programmers to pump out regularly updated Android builds for their device.
I think most people who don't live off of the most current popular smart phones get that feeling "oh no, a new phone just came out, now no one is going to release new Android updates for my old phone."
But also with my problem with Google Play Movies and the Cannot Fetch License error, I understand that is a DRM problem, and for most Android experiences, like say if you just side load your favorite app, then you probably wouldn't worry about DRM...
I heard that coming up fairly soon Google is going to ask app developers to use DRM in their apps to help secure them in the Play Store. I don't remember if it was going to be mandatory, but I wonder what life would be like for us using custom ARM boards trying to run Android and slowly start to notice that new versions of our favorite apps start using DRM...

Stock Android 7.1.2 [microSD boot] [20180921] Release version
#28
Succesfully installed latest EMMC version, but there is no root. I know how to get it in there by flashing SuperSU or Magisk, but I don´t know if bootloader is unlocked and if stock recovery will allow me to do this.. Did somebody have success with root and is it possible to flash another recovery, in the case I am not able to root it with stock? I haven't found any TWRP based ones. Also I need to use OpenGapps, but this has to be flashed with TWRP. I will be happy if somebody can point me in right direction.

Thanks for reply

When will be released the EMMC version? I tried to load image to emmc module, but it does not boot. From SD card it boots, but I need faster and more reliable storage than sd card.

Older build 20180518 is usable, but I have some problems with wifi not connecting to some networks and disconnecting even when I am nearby router.
When I use mobile hotspot and sharing via wifi, it works without any problem.. So I need to test newer build and have it on emmc if possible.

I've had problems with WIFI WPA2 in the past, changing to WPA seemed to solve the problem every time. So I would try with different security settings on the router.
