Possible future Rockchip based Pinebook?
#1
First off, sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, it is just a question I had.

Are there any plans to produce a Pinebook with a different chip? Like the Rockchip RK3399?
It seems to have some advantages over the Allwinner A54.

The RK3399 has 2 extra cores, so it has 2x Cortex-A72 cores @ 2GHz, and 4x Cortex-A53 cores @ 1.5GHz, also it has support for up to 4GB of RAM instead of 2GB, has a faster GPU, and 2 real PCIe lanes so it is possible to add faster SSD storage, use an LTE card, or just add more user expansion options...

I would even be willing to pay $40 more just for a faster ARM CPU and more RAM...
I could add a 128GB eMMC, and a 256GB SD card and it could even replace my aging Core 2 Duo laptop...

It is an idea that has been thrown around more than a few times Wink I think it is in the pipeline, depending on how well the rock64pro, etc takes off, and how much demand there is for a rk upgrade to the pinebook. So stay tuned... it could very well happen! Smile

I think everybody who owns Pinebook would love to upgrade it, because, frankly speaking, its performance is not what most people expect Smile

I think a RockProBook would be pretty good. 99% of the time my laptop is used for running a web browser and SSH sessions (kde on openSuse), which I reckon a rock64pro could easily manage.

Yep, based purely on Geekbench scores of RK3399 devices and from Intel P8700 devices, a RockProBook could probably replace my laptop, if it had at least 4GB of RAM...
Of course, a 15.4" screen would be nice, but not really required...

If the Intel Compute Card concept was taking off, with lots of different docks, then an RK3399 Compute Card would be an interesting proposition.

as it is, there's just one dock, the desktop dock. the idea was there would be be laptop docks (Nexdock say they are actually doing one), TV's with docks, all sorts.

What is the exact reason why RockPro cannot be used in Pinebook? What it does not contain? Something like display connector or what?

the rk3399 used in the RPro64 has everything that you'd need to have it used in a laptop.

I suspect it's simply physical size, the rk3399 board is bigger and there may just not be enough room.

meanwhile, the MNT Reform seems to be making progress

Nope, that's not an issue. The issue is the right price for a FOSS laptop with rk3399
