just tried xmpp on chatty, works fine for some contacts for some other encryption does not work yet

Yes, and I was eventually able to get it to work. The missing step was that I needed to create a new APN in Settings to correspond to the APN info I was able to find online for my carrier.

The limited SMS/MMS testing I was able to do with my test SIM seemed to go well.  I switched the Pinephone to my "daily driver" SIM today.  A big thanks to kop316 and anyone else involved in the MMS project.
