I've bought pinephones from two batches (manjaro and mobian) and each time it has been sleek.
Shipments for the pinephone are made by DHL from Poland, there are no more taxes than the ones paid during billing.
Delay depend on the batches, I've bought the first phone at the begining of the pre-order phase and had to wait something like 6 weeks. For the second one I was luckier, it came in a week
You won't have much notification until the phone is shipped but then it is a matter of days.
I have also bought other products from pine64, that directly came from china (through China Post and La Poste) they come directly to your mailbox in 2-3 weeks, no problems also there.
