Software/Notifications
#1
Possibly I'm doing something very wrong here but I have disabled the notifications in "Settings" for "Software", and when I launch "Software" I also disabled the automatic updates and the notifications. The result of my changes is that not only does "Software" check for updates, but also I still get notifications. Is there a fundamental misunderstanding on my side or do I have to file a bug somewhere?

Right, I have removed the gnome software app, this takes care of the problem. I have not had any issues so far and it removes only 3 packages, so I can recommend this solution for anyone who prefers apt, as I do.

I too find it confusing, ineffective and completely unintuitive. And yes, the first package I remove after any install that has it.
  • ROCKPro64 v2.1 2GB, 16Gb eMMC for rootfs, SX8200Pro 512GB NVMe for /home, HDMI video & sound, Bluetooth keyboard & mouse. Arch (6.2 kernel, Openbox desktop) for general purpose daily PC.
  • PinePhone Pro Explorer Edition, daily driver, rk2aw & U-boot on SPI, Arch/SXMO & Arch/phosh on eMMC
  • PinePhone BraveHeart now v1.2b 3/32Gb, Tow-boot with Arch/SXMO on eMMC

While I make updates through apt in the terminal, I've kept the GNOME Software app. Reason in two words: software discoverability.

Discoverability sucks using the CLI, plain and simple, if you don't already know the package name.

GUIs do have their use.

There is the option to keep gnome software but be much less annoyed by it:
