Back to main thrust of thread, if you remove a few hyperbolic / inflammatory posts, I think what we are talking about boils down to 2 different issues here:

1. Support

2. Warranty

I like what Pine have been discussing for Support, by adding a retail channel and +100 price for those who need it.

They could possibly do the same with Warranty. Offer x more months or years of Warranty for y price. Make it ala carte. Everyone can pick what works for them (or not).
