PINEBOOK Pro USB-C Docking Deck compatibility
#1
Hello people, just saw on twitter the new PINEBOOK Pro USB-C Docking Deck.
I have 2 question though:

  1. Does this USB-C dock work with any USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port say MSi notebook?
  2. In my consideration the cable is too short. Some notebooks have the USB-C on the back of the computer so you need at least half a meter to put the dock properly on the side, otherwise you have to buy an extension.

The Pinebook Pro uses USB3 and DisplayPort to communicate with docks. So any other computer (or smartphone) using that should work.

Thus:
Quote:Does this USB-C dock work with any USB-C

Yes.

Quote:Thunderbolt 3 port

Nope. (Thunderbold is about also exposing a PCIe interface, multiplexec together with DP packets. This dock doesn't support PCIe).
Unless the laptop falls back to USB3 + DisplayPort.
But most Thunderbolt laptops should be able, right? (The USB3+DP dock I am currently using (similar to the offical PinePhone dock) advertises compatibility with Mac Air, and my SO's Mac Air seems to recognize it. So I presume other laptop would be able to fall back to non Thunderbolt ?)

At this moment, does it work with Manjaro ARM on Pinebook Pro? And if it does, does it work with the mainline kernel or with linux-pinebookpro package?

With latest kernel it does support: https://gitlab.manjaro.org/manjaro-arm/p...core/linux.

I tested the dock against PBP:
- GBE/Audio/USB3/-C does work
- HDMI does work 1080p/60, but I continue to work on 4k/30
- I did not yet test PD

I tested the dock against MBP 2019:
- GBE/Audio/USB3/-C does work
- HDMI does work as expected in 4k/30
- I was able to have get PD (using only the first USB-C) to work with MBP. However, I was not able to see USB-C devices connected upstream to PD port
- I was not able to get DP-ALT to work (likely it is not supported)

How does HDMI work on the dock, does it use a USB3 DisplayLink device? Or does is use the DP alt mode and then a DP to HDMI converter?

By the latest kernel, do you mean the one in the ARM Stable Update from today? Does HDMI works with Audio or just Video like on 5.7.19 kernel?

I too would like confirmation on whether it is using DisplayLink or not. I have had a lot of Linux system stability issues with DisplayLink before.

Does the dock work with Windows 10 Intel/AMD CPU?
What about Apple Silicon computers?

At least out of box, the dock does not appear to have drives to function in Windows 10.  If someone could point me towards drivers, that would be awesome.
