Is my wooden desk a safe surface to test the cluster board on?

And if not, what is? The plastic bag it came in? Anything metallic? I don't have a proper box at the moment.

Sure, why not? Earthing is usually provided by the power connection and a wooden table does not conduct electricity. Maybe make sure to discharge static current on yourself before touching it.

Sounds good, thanks!

As long as you don't spill water.

Don't leave it on the bag it came with! I just did that because I wasn't paying attention when I plugged it in. It only took two second to start a fire. Now I am trying to figure out it I ruined the cluster board.

Anti-static bags are conductive! Don't use that or metal, or anything conductive. A wooden benchtop or desktop is ideal.

Wow, thanks for asking this ollehar! I was about to store this in a drawer inside the bag and had no idea that these are conductive or a fire risk.
