18650 cells are indeed quite user swappable and would be great (to upgrade them as well) however, the battery alone has a diameter of 18mm (hence the name) so is indeed incompatible. What is needed for this type of laptop are pouch cells, and I am unaware of standardisation in these type of batteries.

I want this to replace my wife's very ageing Windows 7 laptop. I particularly want to be able to mount NFS shares on this machine.

Seems like by the time a "slightly-more-standardized" battery option were selected, the board and/or internals redesigned, warranty handling processes updated, and instructions provided to customers on how to purchase and install their own batteries, we might have cut substantially into any potential savings on shipping costs vs. just bundling a battery in with the shipped device as originally planned.  While I do _not_ see the major laptop manufacturers as kind and generous charities out to help the human race, I do suspect that they're very skilled at cutting costs... how do they ship batteries (asking seriously - haven't bought a consumer laptop in fifteen years)?

@Luke I guess pinebook pro is fanless as well. I wonder does it suffer from overheating in such thin case?

Nope, you can obviously make it run super hot under artifical load, in which case it will throttle ... but not by much. Under regular use I doubt you'll ever see the PB Pro throttle.
