Sorry but what you are saying here isnt horribly clear. Are you saying the limitation of only one resolution is tied to the same issues as the lack of higher resolutions?

To understand why I do not care you need to know that the HDMI driver in the BSP Kernel driver is missing sources for "libhdmi" (similar to libdram situation for SPL). See https://github.com/longsleep/linux-pine64/blob/pine64-hacks-1.2/drivers/video/sunxi/disp2/hdmi/libhdmi_sun50iw1 for reference.
Would there be any legal issues in disassembling that and rewriting it in C? And would that be of any help?

The basic functionality already there, once over scan issue resolve, we will continue on resolution selection.

The pine is just not usable
i'm experiencing a cropped display on all 4 edges so the available OSs are note usable.
at least 50px are missing on each side.
tested hardware:
-HP w2448hc (1080p-compatible)
-3 different HDMI cables
i tested the following OSses and the behaviour is the same for all:
-xubuntu-xenial-20160421-longsleep-pine64-8GB (already cropped while booting)
-remix-v2.0-20160415-pine64-8GB
-android-ver5.1.1-20160303-pine64-8GB
On another Samsung tv (720p-compatible) the TV gives me a "not supported display mode" for all cables and all OSses.
So there is no chance for me right now to use the PINE at all.
I'm hoping for a fix!

1050P60 is an odd configuration.
I have a spare WSXGA 1680x1050 monitor (it was a thing for some reason in Europe), it's good and fully working monitor and I want to use it as a display for some microPC. I've choosen Pine64 (looks interesting back in the day), but later on I found out it's working only with my main 1080p display, which is unfortunate.

Hmm, so a quick look at the available source code shows this;

.... this seems to be where display modes are defined. Pretty simple to add new modes.
So what is the deal here? Is there a problem with getting "unusual" displays working on this board or not? Presumably, you plug in your timing configuration and hit the compile button, and it spits out a kernel that works with that mode.
Or is this table bogus? Does the hdmi blob ignore it or something?
