My bad.
This is deeply impressive:-
If I want to recompile my own kernel do I do it with this source https://gitlab.com/pine64-org/quartz-bsp/rockchip-linux ?
and if yes, is it the "quartz64" one (branch?) or the "develop-4.19" or one of the others?

I don't have /boot/uEnv.txt did you mean /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf ?
I changed the entry in extlinux.conf to root=UUID=d14648ed-fd3c-4e85-b9fd-619cfcc8d206

I wonder if there is a way to put UUID in the root=
i used the kernel from radxa teams.
sources with patches are already in /usr/src or kernel-source-rk3566-*-noarch-1mara.txz
with UUID, it is loaded from the priority media (if there are 2 of them), and with a specific indication, it is loaded as indicated.

Can you tell me what u-boot source you used please? When I used the Armbian scripts designed for the Rock 3A the u-boot it produces doesn't seem to like the Quartz64. I am wondering if the Rock 3A has an SPI chip.
Anyway clearly you already cracked this so if you can give me any pointers then that would be helpful.

Mara,
I also tried flashing the xfce image to an SD card and I do not get anything. etcher give the following warning. "it looks like this is not a bootable image; the image does not appear to contain a partition table and might not be recognized or bootable by your device"
so I'm clearly missing a step. I saw later and in the tutorial section(https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=14507) you post some u-boot instructions
when i try to apply the patch
Code: patch -p1 < add-u-boot-quartz64.patch"
i get no such file or directory.
so I clearly have a setup issue.
I'm trying to get this board up and running to a desktop so I can start some driver work for the parts my company makes.

README.TXT here is the description of the entry on the sdcard (need to unpack). ah ok. I installed zstd and was able to get it to work. I'm able to boot to the desktop. not familiar with slackware so i will have to do some more reading on it.
FWIW i could not get this to work
Code: or unpack directly to the card
# zstdcat slackware-current-*-server-*-build-*.img.zst > /dev/mmcblk0
but i could unpack it and do a dd to the card.
i will try and revisit the u-boot setup
thanks for the help
