Did you tune the server in a special way, e.g. server.properties or spigot.yml?

Not really, I left it mostly has the spigot build built it, but i did change the mob thresholds a bit higher (so that more can spawn per chunk) and set allow-command-blocks true (its false by default)
I have built a 1.8 spigot and a 1.9.2 spigot jarfile now (i can make them available if it would please people) as i wanted to try SMP maps people had already created.

OK, did the same and some other hints from the forum, but still the 'vanilla' version seems a bit quicker than Spigot...

@Dizzy49I I'm not sure that putting an SSD onto your Pine would have much benefit, because connecting it to the Pine would most likely use USB-2, which theoretically has a max speed of 60MB/s.
But if it's just lying around, sure, go ahead

Even you can run a moded server. 2gb can handle a small (5-10 people) server with many mods.

I have my Pine A64 1 GB up and working with the Ubuntu image , I installed a spigot server 1.9.2 with several of the normal plugins like PEX, essentials and greifprevention and its all wonderful ! I could not get minecraft 1.9 to run smoothly on a raspberry pi2 but its flawless so far on the Pine64.
so far so good, i will test it with more users this weekend and report my results.
