Thank you for the update.
We will test it and added to Wiki and Pine64 Installer.
Updated Q4OS (Pinebook) 2.4-r5 on Wiki and PINE64 Installer.
Added Q4OS (1080P Pinebook) 2.4-r5 on Wiki and PINE64 Installer.
I just got my Pinebook 1080p and it's running Q4OS, which is much faster then the Ubuntu with KDE Neon that was installed by default.

I'm happy with the fact that it runs PHPStorm, Oxygen XML (I use 14) with the openJava jdk that is available in apt repo.

I find video playback with vlc and YouTube in chromium a bit sluggish,

it's a good system, I got it looking kind of like Mac OS classic (i can't get it to look exactly like OS9)
Q4OS for Pinebook 1080p image revision ".r6" has been released. The key change is an adoption to the 1080p resolution, so the fonts and icons sizes has been increased.

On KDE Neon I am able to play 720p at 50-60% cpu for mpv, and mplayer seems to be configured for "gpu" but on q4os it does not seem to be able to play via gpu or even via vdpau drivers?

Hardware video acceleration doesn't work so far, however it should be enabled within some forthcoming Q4OS release. Anyway, you can install Q4OS on top of Armbian Stretch at the moment, see https://www.q4os.org/dqa012.html . Armbian Pinebook edition should be able to use hardware video acceleration https://www.armbian.com/pinebook-a64/

It would be helpful, if you would post back a result.

What I understand here in Armbian forum is that hw video acceleration is not working on Armbian Stretch, which has mainline kernel 4.19.y, or do I not understand correctly?
Well, video acceleration probably doesn't work on Armbian. If so, the Q4OS will not be able to use it as well. You could still try to install the latest Q4OS ".r7" release https://q4os.org/downloads1.html#downloads_spechw , and enable sunxi drivers: "sudo pine64_enable_sunxidrm.sh"
