rock64 hdd from usb3.0
#1
Hi,
I would like to ask is it possible to power some HDD from USB 3.0 on Rock64 sbc ?
I mean without external power - just from usb - probably it should run fine with some external enclosure and 2.5" 5400rpm HDD or SSD ?

USB 3.0 yes, because it can deliver 900mha which will suffice for a 2.5" drive.

So you are sure that Rock64 can deliver that ~1A to usb 3.0 - should be enough to run even 7200rpm drive.

Are you asking for USB 3.0 specification? if yes, read this. The PSU that you ought to use for the R64 is a 3A 5V, so plenty of headroom to power a USB 3.0 2.5" SSD or HDD. Do read tkaiser's post on armbian detailing the Rock64 power usage with a USB 3.0 drive attached (as well as the JMicron JMS578 bridge sold in the store).

I've found with my 3 Rock64's with a single Apacer SSD each that SSD boot is unreliable on 2 of them with USB3. 1 of the Rock64's is fine, I've tried switching drives.
SSD boot when drive plugged into USB2 is very reliable.
Using a powered USB 3 hub is reliable though.
Disk performance is faster with USB3.
