Since OTA is only for non rooted, is there going to be a better way to upgrade rooted android without doing a fresh image install everytime?

The OTA only for non rooted. Once rooted, the OTA code no longer work properly.

This does not answer my question. How do we upgrade the rooted img without starting from scratch.

My answer is very clear and direct. There is no OTA on rooted image due to OTA only can work on unrooted build.

That question has been asked on here multiple times, and I have yet to see an answer other than exactly what you are suggesting..start from scratch with a new image every time.

I'm not an android developer, but I'm struggling to believe thats the only way.

there is a process known as sideload. if the ota can be released as a .zip. if it is possible to temp un-root, apply sideload, root the build once again. this is way i do it with nexus android devices.
1. acquire sideload ota.zip file
2. un-root pine64
3 apply sideload ota.zip
4. root pine64

this will work IF pine64 build can do sideload process, IF sideload ota.zip is released and IF possible to un-root/root the pine64 build. otherwise i do not see a way.

Why can't we use the process custom roms on android phones have since the beginning of android. Recovery, clear cache, flash update.zip, clear cache, reboot. Is the problem that no one has made a custom recovery for this thing or is it not that simple? I'm asking, i really don't know.
#8
yes, i think you are correct about lack of custom recovery. sideload just needs a working adb. i'm not even sure the adb/fastboot for android works on pine64 android or remix. i use debian. the latest remix for pc 3.0.101 is rooted, perhaps that will trickle down to the pine64. the whole android thing is very early in development, can hope over next several months for good stuff, maybe.

The OTA will be release as zip. We are currently preparing one and still pending one small issue to be resolved. Once resolved, we will post out on end of this week.

Will we be able to root and unroot after we apply the zip? You're making it worse but not answering the lead question. Can we update/upgrade rooted android WITHOUT starting with a fresh image everytime?
