Jami on the Pine phone ?
#1
*  Any one care to share their experiences with the Jami App  ?

I found it in the Mobian Bookworm "Software Store"  and it sounds promising.

Running mobian with Jami for 2 days now, and it looks promising. What I have seen so far:
Chat works, but long messages don't fit on the screen (also not in landscape mode).
Calls work.
Video calls work, except for the camera. Receiving video works fine.
Notifications work.

There is no synchronization across multiple devices, but they are working on that.
For now this is my favorite chat app Smile

Glad to know Jami works :-)

Curious about "Swarm" this could possibly be quite invasive ?

They claim with swarm you can still communicate even if you lose your carrier and internet connection.

Swarm is the next Big Thing on Jami's road map.

I believe it is more like syncthing, synchronizing your chats when the connection is restored.

The whole point of Jami (formerly GNU Ring, SFLphone) is totally decentralized communication. Not federated mind you (run your own server, like email/XMPP), but completely decentralized (no servers required at all).

It is also an official GNU project.

Therefore I am not sure what your concerns are when you say "invasive"?

For the most Linux-y experience on your Linux phone, try SXMO!

At this topic (https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=13004) you can see how jami-qt can be build for the pinephone.
I tried this and did not succeed on mobian bookworm. Partly because of an older Qt-version in debian (Qt 5.17 while 6.2 is needed for the new jami version) and because of my lack of knowledge/skill. So I found a way to build the jami-gnome version. Chat works, although it is sometimes difficult to get text input. Calls work fine, but the camera doesn't work with video-calls (see other topic how to resolve this).
Adding contacts, importing/registering account and attachments work fine.

If you want to try it yourself this is what you can do:

Download the latest tarball here: https://dl.jami.net/release/tarballs/?C=M;O=D

Extract the tarball

cd /tarballdirectory (change this accordingly)

sudo ./build.py --dependencies

./build.py --install --global-install

Jami-gnome to start

It is now even easier to install Jami through flatpak (with an up to date version):
