passwd / can't log in

This is a noob mistake, but I just received my Pinebook Pro and the first thing I did was use `passwd` to change both my user password and the root password. Then I rebooted my machine and now I can't login at all using the new passwords nor the default passwords.

I see now there is a different method in the online doc to change the default user password, but I'm a bit stuck. Is there something I can do or do I just need to re-image and start over?
