No sound on PBP default installation - ivek - 11-08-2019

Hi,

I just received the PBP with preinstalled Debian + Mate. everything is more or less fine, except that the sound doesn't work at all:
 - neither on speakers, nor on headphones
 - in Alsamixer no setting helped me, when trying to set output to default, the Alsamixer aborts and I can't rerun it
 - I tried checking sound from "control panel", I think there is no connection to Pulseaudio (but Pulseaudio is installed)
 - when I play a song (no sound ofcourse), one setting in volume control says that there is no app playing the sounds, although it's playing.

I haven't tried to update anything, I don't know the commands.
I don't know if I need maybe to set that UART switch if set to off, but I need to open the laptop for that. (as in thread https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=8231)
I haven't tried it on HDMI, I don't see that port, only UCB-C, if it is meant for HDMI, I have no adapter to try..

I am pretty much a noob in Linux, so any help with an elaborated answer (links to explanations like "how to install or try out a new OS") would be appreciated  Smile

Hi ivek,
I received my PBP just yesterday, and also had no sound. Found that "output volume" was set to Mute (under Control Center - Sound Preferences). All good once unchecked. Note: the "test speakers" under hardware does not work.
Apologies if this was really obvious and you have already checked this setting.
Cheers Bruce.

I had the same problem,  there is another thread on this same subject,  Deebeez had a quick & easy fix.....
rather than repeat it I suggest looking at that other thread...
AND  check your audio with real sound like YouTube or something....  The 'Test speaker'  does not seem to work on this OS.

RE: No sound on PBP default installation - ivek - 11-09-2019

Tx for your help guys, still no luck...

brucec1999 Wrote "Found that "output volume" was set to Mute (under Control Center - Sound Preferences). "

Already been there, in my PBP that option is completely grayed out.. maybe that's a clue  Smile

We already tried everything in Alsamixer, not working... when output set to default (from the sound device), alsamixer aborts and can't be started again, as I wrote..

If nothing else works, I will try another Linux, maybe Ubuntu + Cinnamon.. going to buy an McroSD card now

@bcnaz, We already tried turning on everything in Alsamixer, the sound output is set to the only device that could play... if I set it to "default", the Alsamixer aborts and can't be started again...

If nothing helps, I will buy a MicroSD card and try another OS

RE: No sound on PBP default installation - bcnaz - 11-09-2019

DID you try it on a site like YouTube ? When I tried the 'TEST' function mine did not work.... But it works on YouTube.

I did also add some alsa software thru synaptic (do not remember the exact names)

Small update, tried booting Android, sound is working, so it isn't a hardware problem.

I saw that in some other PBP system image notes, (ayufan's image compatibility list)
Debug UART is Disabled, as it causes sound issues, with boards up to v2.1

Maybe this is needed, just need to figure out how & where to disable it.

Also I will open another thread, to ask how to boot Ubuntu + Cinnamon, if there are some images prepared...

Ok, dumdum - I was logged in as root Big Grin , all the time, that's the first thing I tried when I gotten it, now I'm logged in as the user "rock", sound working without any problem.. update button visible also, and layout is different  Smile
