Wierd Dietpi boot/non-boot issue - miguelito - 05-25-2018

Greetings all:

Hardware: Rock64 w/4GB RAM + 16GB MicroSD Card
OS: Dietpi

Issue:
When I use the recommended forked version of Etcher (running on Win 10) to flash Dietpi, I get NO video output. I even flashed it again but no video output

However, when I use Etcher (running on Arch), I get the normal Dietpi boot-up.

Why????

What is the forked version of Etcher doing (differently)?

Thanks,
Mike

Probably a different version, looking at the json config file it's getting this file:

http://files.pine64.org/os/ROCK64/dietpi/DietPi_v156_Rock64-arm64-(Stretch).img.xz

What version did you flash?

EvilBunny,

I just chose the image offered from the menu using the forked Pine64 installer:

DietPi_v145_Rock64-arm64-(Stretch).img.xz

It looks like the forked installer downloads  an older version.  Maybe the installer needs to pull only the newest images?

Anyway,  thanks for the quick reply!
Mike

looking at version numbers, 145 is older than 156.

Also are you using a monitor or tv?

My tv sets the right resolution, but either my monitor or the dvi adaptor into it sends corrupt screen info and I have to force the resolution to be 1080p.

Evilbunny,

I used the version of Dietpi that the forked Etcher offers:

http://files.pine64.org/os/ROCK64/dietpi/DietPi_v145_Rock64-arm64-(Stretch).img.xz

When you select Dietpi from the Etcher menu (and not select a specific download) this is the version that you get.

This explains it! Maybe the Etcher should only pull the most recent version of the images?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Regards,
Mike

Bunny,

I'm using an old (ancient) Toshiba TV/monitor. I don't think it's 1080. I think it's 720. Given that Dietpi is running ncurses (bash scripts) I would think that the default video config would be a failsafe one. I'm running the Rock64 headless so after the initial config, I'm only using SSH.

I don't know why it's pulling that version, because the config file points to the link I posted above. v156.

So long as it works is the main thing.

I just installed the installer and the only way v145 shows up is if you select the pine64 board, if you select the rock64 board it shows v156
