It would be nice if anyone would drop any scrap of information here from time to time. No dates or anything. Just if any progress was made because I read in some other thread about EULA problems which is still not entirely clear to me.

Edit: And what is happening with pine64.pro web site? It is very often offline now.

It appears that a nice person put a backhoe through Lenny's backyard, so there was a minor issue there for a while with the tubes... but it looks like he's back on the air again now! Wink

RE: HW Acceleration Working - Terra854 - 08-29-2016

Is there any instructions on how to set up Mali on our Pine? Cause if the blobs cannot be included in the image due to licensing issues, at least there should be a howto guide for those of us who cannot wait to integrate the blobs manually by ourselves.

Terra854, that is a great suggestion!!!

I think if it would be possible some would made it already. Isn't EULA also needed if you want to distribute it (provide download for it)? I'm not sure but I think it is.

I think that AllWinner released the MALI blobs publicly and the link is somewhere buried in this thread. But that is a good point Monochrome..

Following up on Terra854's suggestion, (longsleep please correct us if we are wrong) Would the first step be to follow the instructions on this post?:

http://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=587&pid=17035#pid17035

And, if that is indeed the way, what would be the subsequent steps to get the Mali blobs working?

AFAIK, the issue is redistributing the binaries, not downloading for personal use. The Mali blobs seem to be here:

http://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/Mali_Driver

Some guidance from people with experience doing this would be greatly appreciated.

Thirded. A basic howto on download and compile with dependencies from a fresh image would be great.

If you are a developer everything you ask is trivial. If you are not a developer, why do you need the mali blobs loaded - what's the use except that your system will run slower and you have to switch to an experimental kernel line?

I assume your tl;dr answer is "It's too hard, so don't bother." Didn't know it's such a hassle for a non-developer.

hi Captain,  the reason I do not personally recommend mali is that it is "too hard" for most people to handle.

... but the more important reason is longsleep's point, namely, it really doesn't buy you anything except an experimental kernel , a bloated image , probably performance degradation , and a very limited in-memory accelerator for openGL GLES;  granted, 'some' things will work with it, and if you are 'needing' that 'something' (deliberately left un-mentioned) then by all means go for installing mali... but, you are going to be frustrated if you are not a skilled developer.

(hope this helps)
