phone calls are enough for now - wehape2bees - 07-29-2022

hello

I would really really really like to have a Linux cell phone.

I understand the pinephones are Beta right now.

What I am wondering, are there any PinePhones out there that have been gone over by hackers that are ready for use?

I am willing to pay extra for the extra finishing work.

I have limited experieince and limited time but a lot of enthusiazm for a phone for the people.  What I mean is a phone that is made for the people to use and NOT made to use people.

thank you.

Hello!

Original Pinephone Beta is good to go as daily driver but IMO it will not work "out of the box".
Alltough It is really really close and there is only one mandatory thing:
if you want reliable phone (as phone Big Grin ) you need to install Biktorgjs firmware to modem - it is easy and it will not take a long but you have to do this. This is only my personal opinion but I have tried billion solutions and without this PP is not ready for daily use as a phone

maybe basics work in pinephone regular but i don't recommend for novice users unless they willing to learn some basics of linux, like pacman for arch and manjaro, apt or aptitude for mobian and apk (not android apk) for postmarketos. ssh is also helpful.

i recommend stock rom though and version 30.006.30.006, there was some issues with half-free firmware but i don't remember what was it. however, i recommend changing usb settings for both stock and half-free firmware, https://github.com/the-modem-distro/pinephone_modem_sdk/blob/kirkstone/docs/SETTINGS.md . from ...ATTR{power/control}="auto" into ...ATTR{power/control}="on" .
