sd card wear vs partition size - guenther - 11-07-2021

Hi folks!

Let's say I have a 32GB sd card with a partition smaller than full size, eg. 1GB. Will it wear out faster than with a full size partition or will the wear laveling use the unallocated space anyway?

Wear leveling on SD cards in done by the SD card hardware. The SD card hardware does not know anything about partitioning. So, wear leveling on your 1GB partition spreads over your whole 32 GB card.

This is not true for raw flashes where the filesystem is doing wear leveling.
