Screen-off = dead phone - okgo - 05-09-2021

I have been trying different distros on my Pinephone, and I love the layout and speed of Ubuntu Touch. However, whenever I turn the screen off, it will not wake up again (the screen flickers and then goes permanently black), and I have to hold the power-button for 10 seconds and boot it back up again. I haven't had any such problem on the other distros, so it clearly seems software-related.

This problem occurred on the latest 5/6 stable version downloaded from here: https://ci.ubports.com/job/rootfs/job/rootfs-pinephone-systemimage/

Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround?

Thanks!

@okgo  Have you tried a 2 or 3 second press of the power button? I recall experiencing the screen flash like that some time back, and holding the power button for a few seconds worked for me. I'm currently running my PinePhone with UBPorts on the KernelUpgrade channel, and I'm not seeing that quick flash and back to black.

Mark

I tried various power-on methods... and since it flickered the screen and then went black again, it makes me think that something was attempted and then failed - rather than that I wasn't hitting the button right. But I'm all ears for solutions!

I'd suggest trying the kernel update channel. At this point it works better for me than stable. If you don't like it you can always change back.

RE: Screen-off = dead phone - jaysistar - 05-25-2021

I've had the same problem with Ubuntu Touch, but I haven't tried the "kernel update channel". I'll look for it.

Is this what you meant? https://ci.ubports.com/job/rootfs/job/rootfs-pinephone-systemimage-kernelupgrade/

RE: Screen-off = dead phone - jaysistar - 05-25-2021

I've confirmed that the problem with the blank screen does not occur with the kernel upgrade image.

RE: Screen-off = dead phone - okgo - 05-30-2021

Yes, I also confirm that downloading from here worked without the dead-screen problem https://ci.ubports.com/job/rootfs/job/rootfs-pinephone-systemimage-kernelupgrade/

But unfortunately UbuntuTouch just doesn't seem to be there yet. Camera doesn't work, Firefox, Yubikey, and a real Bitwarden client missing...

I am having the exact same problem right now.  I will try this image. If I can't get this to work I will try Postmarket OS.  Love Ubuntu touch when it is running though

Just pulled the latest image from here : https://ci.ubports.com/job/rootfs/job/rootfs-pinephone-systemimage/
and installed it to a new pine phone right out of the box to internal flash and i'm running into the exact same problem.

Cannot wake the device by pressing the button on the side singularly or holding it for 2-3 seconds. Once the screen fades out, you cant wake the device. Totally unusable.
Is there a fix for this? The link shown above appears to be broken and reference to that build looks like it wont build anymore?!

Any help is appreciated, this is my first experience with the pinephone out of the box

Switch update settings to release candidate channel, and update. Just be careful and not let the phone sleep while you do it... Tongue
