PinePhone in Canada - GFreeman - 10-29-2020

All,

Has anyone had any experience using the Pinephone on Canadian wireless networks? Since even the smaller carriers buy time on the Big-3 networks (Rogers, Bell, Telus), there isn't much to choose from. I'm currently on Rogers with my iPhone, so I'm wondering if simply getting another SIM and using it on that network will work. I think it will, but I'm interested in hearing from the experience of others.

Best,

Graham

I'm on telus here in Canada. I just swaped in my old sim card from my old phone and it worked out of the box with manjaro (phosh beta 1). I have text and calls (haven't tried the rest yet). Calls are alright, there is a bit of interference but I can at least be heard and hear other people.

All,

Thank you for the responses. I got it working on Rogers with no problem. So far, it's working pretty well. Calls and texts are fine. It's a bit glitchy in some respects, but overall, it's a perfectly usable second phone.

I'm looking forward to working with it and playing around with Linux some more.

Best,

Graham

You need to get it from the pine64 store. https://pine64.com/product-category/pinephone/?v=0446c16e2e66

The Price is in USD and you can only have the phone in your cart. I bought the Convergence package ($199.99 USD) Sunday night and my CC charged me $287.24 Canadian. DHL will also charge me ~$35 CAD to import the phone.

Edit, Braveheart, and PMos Community Editions work fine on Public Mobile. I bought the Mobian Community Edition too, which I'm sure will be fine.

Ordered my phone today. I'm hoping I can say goodbye to tracking and hello to privacy in Canada.
UPDATE: received phone yesterday Mar2/21 , going to 7/11 and get an anonymous sim card and voucher tomorrow. Anyone else just starting with their new phone in Canada?
