Best O.S. to use Pine as MediaCenter and Browser? - marco97pa - 05-27-2016

I used Ubuntu for about one month. I was interested in learning Linux basics and have a Linux machine in my house. At this moment, playing a video on Ubuntu is difficult, as of lack of GPU support. Hardware acceleration helped, but not so much.
I am going to move on Android to use it as a MediaCenter and surf the net (using Ethernet). Before formatting my microSD, I ask you:"Is Android the real good choice to watch videos (from a USB key)? Are there issues with Ethernet connection?"
Thanks for your help.
P.S.: I saw a video of someone playing N64 games on Pine with Android: it could be really cool

Did you download Kodi from the Play store or installed it manually?

I downloaded Kodi from the Play Store and it doesn't see very stable so far on my Pine 2GB version.
Did you use any specific settings?

The ''exit'' button on Kodi doesn't seem to work. I have to close running apps from Android home.

I installed the Phoenix version using Phoenixcard (more info: http://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/PhoenixCard).
It could generate some error during the burning. No worry! Try again with "Format to Normal" or close the application and open it again.

Then I start using my Pine2GB with Android.
I installed Kodi (and other software) using Play Store.

What I tested:
Internet navigation - very good
Movie - excelent (I tested different resolutions, different estensions and different codecs with no problem).

The only problem i found was: poweroff Android. I solved with an Arduino button and 2 cables. The button could be welded on the board if you want.

Thanks for your answer.

I have burnt the image with Win32diskimager and Android is fast and fluid so I guess the glitches don't have to do with OS image.

I will try again this evening to see how it goes. I suppose you played 1080p material over streaming and performed well (?)

I tried 1080p in local streaming (Netgear Readyshare) with the samples you can find here: http://www.divx.com/en/devices/profiles/video

I tried "Micayala Gatto" in particular.

I also tried 2 of these DivX samples in 1080p with Android native player and play very smooth.
I haven't tried them with Kodi though.

Thanks

Kodi on Ubuntu or Debian is incredibly slow, currently. Haven't tried Arch.

Kodi on the current Linux images is so very bogged down, that moving the cursor is a challenge.

Linux doesn't have hardware acceleration yet. So games and video are currently impossible

Another reason for slowness could be that your microSD card is slow. See this thread, which is about connecting a solid state disk via the USB port. http://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=64&pid=12937#pid12937.
