Pardon my ignorance, but how do I install Manjaro XFCE (on SD card)? Do I just downlad straight from the downloads page on the Manjaro website (https://manjaro.org/download/) or is there a specific build for the pinebook pro? Is this where I go https://forum.manjaro.org/t/manjaro-arm-preview4-for-pinebook-pro/112647? When I click on the link for to download preview 4 with xfce here, I get 'page not found here https://osdn.net/projects/manjaro-arm/storage/pbpro/xfce/preview4/.

I also feel a little lost
If I understand well, to build a bootable SDcard, I need to have a machine already running Manjaro and install the tools?

I've never been able to get boot with these images.
Is it normal after creating them with dd not to have a boot partition?
I used this command : sudo dd if=Manjaro-ARM-xfce-pbpro-19.12.1.img of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=4k status=progress

Bingo! I see it now. I'll get down to that later now that I know where to go (laptop is not with me right now). Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. The Wikipedia page is good.

I think I can answer that. Just use the operating system you already have on your pinebook pro to download the manjaro iso file. Download it straight to the SD card. Then make a bootable file out of it using the default software already on the computer (I think I saw 'installer' mentioned in a nearby post here, or else with 'dd etcher' (I hope I've got the name right there). Or else indeed do this from another computer with whatever operating system and tools that happen to be on it. I'm going to go at it myself straight from Debian mate on the pine this evening and I'll let u know how I get on. I think u might have to format the SD card first though even if it's new. I think I see the preferred format in a nearby post here. M1 I think it says.
I'm wrong about the meaning of 'dd'. It seems that refers to the option you choose if you want it to replace the existing o.s. on your emmc drive.

I tried with several SD Cards, including one that booted with the official Debian.
I'll try to check with PINE64 installer.

dd is the command to write to SD or emmc.
For the moment I would like to do it with SD to test Manjaro.
I had a Manjaro on my old computer that died...
I'm willing to get a description of your actions to set all this up.

That's an outdated image. Current release downloads can be found here: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/manjaro-arm-19-12-released/114406
Did you get that preview image from the wiki? We need to update it if so.
To install for booting off SD, download a PBP image without 'emmc-installer- in the filename to your computer. Use dd or an app to burn the image to SD (i.e. Etcher.) After that you can insert the SD into the PBP and boot from it.
